The gi can be used against you in chokes, tightens armlocks and more. Boxing Fans do not want to see so much clinching as there is enough already and with a short it would be harder to seperate the boxers due to friction. As for boxing this is my opinion as I am not a professional boxer however it makes sense to leave the shirt out of the ring for a better fight.
